Apprenticeship - Baton Rouge

Apprenticeship Guidelines and Pertinent Information

NATURE OF WORK:
Fabricates and installs architectural sheet metal, industrial, and ducts for heating and air condition systems in residential and commercial buildings. Lay out, and bends, cuts, and performs all operations needed to form metal into the desired shapes. Installs and maintains heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Medium work: Should be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.; frequent lifting or carrying up to 25 lbs.. Should be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, feel, and see.

BASE WAGE FOR TRAINED WORKER:
See our current wage rates for the current package which also includes the following benefits: 401(k), local pension, national pension, health and welfare, apprentice/journeyman training.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Both inside and outside, with exposure to noise and vibration. The work varies considerably, depending upon the installation. Often work is prepared in the shop then transported to the job for installation. Must be able to work from ladders and scaffolds, sometimes in awkward positions.

TRAINING DURATION:
A five (5) year program of night classes. (1,012 classroom hours)
Minimum of 10,000 hours of on the job training.

COST OF TRAINING:
The average cost to train an apprentice for 5 years is $15,400 which is funded by the Local 214, JATC.

USUALLY EMPLOYED BY:
Sheet metal shops, heating and air condition contractors, architectural shops, industrial shops, and specialty shops.

WHEN TO APPLY:
The training center will accept applications Monday thru Friday between the hours of 9:00am to 4:00pm. Applications must be submitted in person, and you must meet the minimum qualification requirements.  NO EXCEPTIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age
  2. Possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  3. Provide copies of the following documents at the time of application:
    1. Birth certificate
    2. High school diploma or G.E.D.
    3. High school and college transcripts
    4. Valid Louisiana drivers license
    5. Military release papers DD-214 (if applicable)
    6. All applicants are subject to a Substance Abuse Test: prior to being hired to any sheet metal shop.
